Going Beyond High Speed Access

The broadband revolution has accelerated exponentially. Analysts predict that by 2013, there will be nearly 3 billion fixed and mobile subscribers globally. Given such numbers, broadband has the power to enhance the bottom line for operators in years to come. Join us at the China Next Generation Broadband Summit to examine the key factors behind sustaining data subscribers and revenues going forward as well as the challenges that lie ahead.

OPPORTUNITIES IN BROADBAND BASED SERVICES

NG Home Gateway: Connecting Homes, Enabling Services”
Duncan Bees, CTO, Home Gateway Initiative (HGI)

The Next Generation Home Gateway (HG) forms the cornerstone of the Broadband Service Provider (BSP) strategy in the connected home. As BSPs build their presence in the home with increased bandwidth and service offerings, the NG HG must deliver fast increasing performance. This talk reviews the requirements for NG HGs in service capability, quality of service, home network connectivity, and software modularity. Commonalities and differences in regional requirements, including Asian and European requirements, will be addressed.

TV Control is the New Consumer Control
Gan Weining, Senior Manager, Business Strategy, Broadband Access, Ericsson

China has accelerated its plans to digitize its cable sector adding more competitive pressure to telecom operators to provide content and network strategies to boost their current video offerings. With streamed peer-to-peer video services becoming the mainstream, operators in the region must secure scalable strategies that will allow them to build a network capable of handling these bandwidth-intensive demands for both fixed and mobile traffic. With low PayTV penetration rates, operators are to turn towards offering attractive online video services as these flourish alongside China's massive Web expansion.

Key topics:
• Network architecture recommendations based on fiber upgrades
• Key elements in a converged architecture for fixed and backhaul solutions
•  How different solutions can they be combined to secure industry momentum
• Testing solutions and assessing ROI

NEXT GENERATION NETWORK & ACCESS

Global Overview of Market and Regulatory Development of Next Generation Network
CW Cheung, Consulting Director, Ovum

Next generation broadband networks will generate significant social-economic welfare to the overall competitiveness of a country. It will also create tremendous economic gains to different industry sectors through its enablement of convergence services, multimedia content and applications. Asia-pacific will lead the world in the deployment of next generation networks, both wired and wireless. We also see increasing roles of governments in this Region in terms of policy and regulatory support to NGN rollout. We shall have an overview of market development, drivers and challenges, business and regulatory implications. Case studies will be used to illustrate some key perspectives.
• Market overview and latest developments of NGN
• FTTx
• Mobile broadband
• Business drivers and challenges
• Case studies: BQS by Said Business School of Oxford University, FTTH Council
• Business and regulatory implications to market players

Optimizing Broadband Networks for Enhanced Subscriber QoE
Don Bowman, Co-founder & CTO, Sandvine

According to the Broadband Forum, the Asian broadband market grew at a healthy 18% over the past year ending in June 2009, with China contributing to two-thirds of growth in numbers of new subscribers.
As service providers in China continue to add subscribers at an astounding rate, coupled with a dramatic shift in consumer behavior towards real-time entertainment applications such as streaming video and online gaming, network optimization in the form of policy control will become a key component for managing scarce bandwidth resources and enhancing overall subscriber Quality of Experience (QoE).
This presentation will explore advanced network monitoring techniques in the form of policy control for delivering real-time information on the health and overall standing of a broadband network by managing traffic down to the specific applications and/or individual subscriber and allocating resources on-the-fly when and where it is needed. In addition, the presenter will also highlight how policy control can effectively become a first line of defense and boost network security by identifying and minimizing damage caused by viruses, Worms, Trojans and other malicious traffic.
The following are key takeaways for attendees:
• Lowering operating costs through policy control and traffic management
• Techniques for effectively monitoring, managing, and reporting broadband traffic for enhancing QoE
• Using policy control for managing malicious network traffic and other threats
• Real-world examples from Tier-1 broadband service providers
